We are only 21 weeks in to 2018 and there have already been 22 fatal school shootings. There has been more school shootings in these past 18 years than in the entire 20th century.
May 18, 2018 in Santa Fe High School, Texas a 17 year old male, Dimitrios smuggled a .38 revolver and a shotgun under his trench coat. This mass murder killed 8 students and 2 teachers, and wounded 17 others. His intentions were to kill the students he didn't like and save the students he liked to have his story told.
A catastrophic shooting that happened on February 14, 2018 in Parkland, Florida brought out a new movement against gun violence. Nikolas Cruz, a 19 year old student who attended Stoneman Douglas High School, killed 14 students and 13 staff members, 17 students wounded. This shootout is known as the seventh deadliest massacres.
The majority of the 21st century shooters are underaged, proving that it is now easier for them to have access to guns and weapons. Most of the shooters suffered from mental health issues or had limited conflict resolution skills.
President Trump vowed to take action after the Parkland shooting, who the president himself is a member of the National Rifle Association. He said that the NRA will look at stricter background check and raise the minimum age to buy an assault weapon.
The presidents solution to school shootings is to arm teachers. According to the Guardian.com Mr. Trump stated “But if he had a firearm, he wouldn’t have had to run, he would have shot him, and that would have been the end of it. This would only obviously be for people who are very adept at handling a gun. It’s called concealed carry, where a teacher would have a concealed gun on them. They’d go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a gun-free zone. Gun-free zone to a maniac, because they’re all cowards, a gun-free zone is: ‘Let’s go in and let’s attack, because bullets aren’t coming back at us”.
In an interview with Anthony Vega about school shootings, he proclaims “ A school is a place to learn, not to be frightful about your life being taken away. Teachers being armed can be a possible cause of the next mass murder. A depressed teacher is capable of doing anything.”
