Shot Put

As a student who played shot put in school, while looking up the sport, i found little research of it being played in school. Shot put is an athletics sport where people try to “put’’ a heavy weighted ball as far as they can. They are not allowed to throw it, but instead they push the ball out into the air. They “put’’ the ball by their neck and pushing it through the air. The shot put has been part of the olympics since 1896.

According to IAAF, “The Ancient Greeks threw stones as a sport and soldiers are recorded as throwing cannon balls in the Middle Ages but a version of the modern form of the discipline can be traced to the Highland Games in Scotland during the 19th century where competitors threw a rounded cube, stone or metal weight from behind a line.”

The men’s shot put has been part of every modern Olympics since 1896, but women putters had to wait until 1948 before they could compete at the Games.

Brian Oldfield was an American athlete, A standout shot putter, mastering a technique that let him throw the 16-pound metal ball farther than anyone in his day.

Brian Oldfield once said, “When you doubt your powers, you power your doubts”.
