The Cascade Cougars

Statistics shows that a large population of viewers for the NBA (National Basketball Association) is 59% of teenagers from ages fifteen to eighteen. By saying that I’m sure students in Satellite are very well informed and updated about what’s going on in the NBA right now, but what student’s don’t know much about is the school’s basketball team itself. Cascades High School basketball team has been around for quite some time now and for a while it had just been students from Cascades only that were allowed to join the team, but for the first time ever student’s from Forsyth Satellite were allowed to try out for the basketball team as well.

The team players are number fifteen Bryan Herron, number twenty four Peter Michel, and number zero Jovan Stewart which are students of Satellite. As for the rest of the team you have number thirteen Nizeer Ali, number twenty two Jason Jace Jr. , number five Pierrot Jean Charles Jr. , number eleven Nathan Perez , number twenty five Edwin Rivera, and number twelve Darshaun Wynn which are students from Cascades High. The boys basketball team had kicked off their first game on November 6th 2017 at Taft Educational Campus against Claremont International High School blowing them out with a score of 75 to 38. From here on out it was a good season start with constant wins for the Cascade Cougars. (Scores are shown below)

SCORES: PSAL

CLOSE UP: Bryan Herron

One of the star players on the team senior Bryan Herron has had a really good season. Averaging 11 points each game, 10 rebounds , and 16 assist. Bryan states that he has seen his basketball skills improve drastically ever since joining the basketball team. Coach Schackner placing pressure on him and giving him a hard time at practices initially paid off at the end of the season because it made him become a better player overall.

I was able to sit down with one of the players from the team where he gave us a little insider on what he thinks about the basketball team overall.

Kenya : Based on the stats on PSAL it seems to me that you get the most PT out of all the players on the team that are from Satellite, in your opinion do you believe that you’re the strongest player from Satellite?

Bryan : “To be honest I think I’m the best basketball player in Forsyth because nobody in Forsyth takes basketball seriously other than me and a couple of other kids and the ones that do take it “seriously” they’re good players just not on my level.”

Kenya : What made you decide to try out for the basketball team?

Bryan : “I wanted to join the basketball team when I first came to Satellite that’s what I originally transferred here for but when I got here Mike told me that there wasn’t a basketball team here and that only Cascades had a team. At the time I wasn’t allowed to sign up for the team at Cascades so I just trained all year round and finally during my last year at Satellite, Cascades announced they were allowing players from Satellite to join and once this happened I was the first one to sign up for the team.”

Kenya: How do you feel about the merging of the two schools to make one team?

Bryan: “I think it was a good move to allow Satellite players with Casacades, we all got along very well and at the end of the season we became a family.”

Kenya : How would you describe the practices? Was Schackner hard on you guys?

Bryan: “I would say that he made practices really fun actually, but it was hard sometimes but everything was worth it I seen my skills improve drastically.

Kenya : The team was 2nd place in the league but lost to aspirations with the score of 64 to 51 .. what are your thoughts about that?

Bryan: “I was mad about the loss but not that mad. I was quite happy that I got to play and it was a really good game but we could’ve done better second quarter was horrible.

Overall all of the players has outdone themselves this season, Bryan wasn’t the only one. Many of the players put just as much as hard work and dedication as the next one. Basketball means a lot to these boys clearly just by looking at the score you can see that. The practices, the games, everything eventually paid off and just made the boys into better players than they were before. As the season went on you can see that the love for basketball has brought these boys together and became a family. Hopefully the teams can continue to merge together every year, it clearly was a success.
