In the mood for a horror movie that will leave you hanging from the edge of your seat from start to finish? John Krasinski’s ‘A Quiet Place’ is the movie for you. This movie starts off on “Day 89” in the post-apocalyptic world. We are introduced to a unnamed family of four, a father (John Krasinski), his wife (Emily Blunt), and three children, their eldest daughter, who is deaf, and two sons. We see the family in an abandoned store gathering supplies, as they speak to each other in sign language and are very quiet and careful not to make any noise. We are quickly introduced to the conclusion that sound is dangerous and curious to find out why. When their youngest son finds a toy and powers it up, making a loud noise, our questions are quickly answered, in one of the most intense scenes of the film.
The rest of the film takes place over a year later, we see the family grieving over the loss of their youngest, while the wife, who is 38 weeks pregnant, is preparing to raise their new unborn child in silence. The family continues to fight for survival while also trying to find a way to stop these creatures that kill for any sound they hear. The film does not stray away from your typical horror movie situations such as a nail sticking out from the floor, or the suspenseful jumpscare, but Krasinski takes his own spin on those situations and makes them 10 times more intense. The silence and little to no dialogue in the movie leaves the audience feeling intense and wondering what will happen next. He also strays even further away from his character of Jim for ‘The Office’ and shows us a responsible, loving father fighting for his family. This movie is intense from start to finish but an overall enjoyable movie.
