Who Is Stacey Abrams?

Stacey Abrams, 44, is running in the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election, and she has the potential to make history. She could be the first African American woman in the history of the United States to hold the office of governor. Abrams identifies as a progressive Democrat, and a number of her beliefs include criminal justice reform, improved public education, expanded Medicaid, and reducing poverty.

“Mrs. Abrams is the only candidate for governor of Georgia who has real solutions that will help the lives of working people in Georgia.” claimed Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in an endorsement for the Democratic candidate.

Abrams won the nomination as the Democratic candidate, beating out her primary rival, Stacey Evans. The Republican nomination is still a toss-up between Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp, but whoever receives the nomination as the Republican candidate will face Abrams in the general election for the position of governor.

In an interview pertaining to Abrams, a source, who has chosen to remain anonymous, expresses, “It’s about time that an African American woman is leading a state in the South. It is surprising to me that it has taken this long for the United States to potentially have an African American woman governor. I’m disappointed it has taken this long because in the past, I believe there have been many qualified African American woman to run for state government. I am a supporter of Senator Sanders and I respect his political views. I like the fact that he supports Abrams because it means that she has the quality and skills to be a great governor.”

Abrams was born on December 9th, 1973 in Madison, Wisconsin, and raised in Gulfport, Mississippi. Other careers she has held in the past include being a writer, publishing numerous articles on issues of public policy, taxation, and nonprofit organizations, and several romance suspense novels under the pen name Selena Montgomery, acting as the Representative of the 84th and 89th House Districts from 2007-2013 and 2013-2017, respectively, and serving as the House Minority Leader in the Georgia General Assembly.
