Why Alcohol?

Did you know alcohol can cause a disorder? Daily drinking of alcohol can be addictive and can turn into alcoholism. Alcoholism is when a person has no control over the amount of alcohol they consume. It can happen at any age as long as you are a heavy drinker. It is easy to diagnose because if the drinking becomes dependable for the body to control emotions or control physical state then it is clear there is a problem. Alcohol use disorder has many effects on a person lifestyle and health.

Alcohol consumption becomes worst because it can become a component of a person’s life. Drinking can be a form of substance a person can turn to. In agreement with Carol Galbicsek, in her article “What is Alcoholism” she acknowledges that coping with a loss can be a main factor of depending on alcohol because it takes over your emotional, physical and mental state. Even it being temporarily it can turn into an ongoing problem. According to Carol, another factor of alcoholism can be dealing with anxiety. Having anxiety causes people to be anxious, overthink, be nervous or worried, so “drinking lowers an individual's inhibitions and makes them more comfortable in social situations.” Naturally if the situation continues it will eventually turn to and addictive behavior.

A current alcoholic, Nelson, was a social drinker in his home country Dominican Republic, when he arrived here in New York City e started drinking more not socially but having the crave to drink alcohol. I asked Nelson, “why do you drink?”. He responded, “my biggest trouble in life was depression, everytime I would get home from work I would feel alone because my wife and children live in Dominican Republic and my thoughts made me drink. It used to be the best feeling ever.”

This reveals how alcohol can become a everyday habit if you make it part of your life. Nelson let his emotional state affect his life, he made into a daily routine. Only way to end alcoholism is to receive help.
