When do you think it’s the right time to move out?

There are many reasons why young people choose to leave home. Some move out because they want more independence, but being independent and wanting independence are different things. Having a job, savings, and maturity are all needed before moving out.

Moving out of your parents home is a significant milestone in transitioning to adulthood. But while living by yourself grants you greater independence, it does mean you have to start paying the bills.

Tashana Jones, a 25-year-old woman who recently got her own place, commented, “Once I decided to leave home my life changed dramatically because I don’t have my parents to depend on anymore. I have to learn how to be an adult and take care of myself financially.”

“The Balance.com” suggest before moving out, make sure that you have a monthly budget. Aim for the 50/30/20 budgeting method. After taxes are taken out of your check, 50% of your budget should go towards ‘must haves’ like rent, bills, and groceries. Then, 30% goes towards ‘wants’ like vacations, entertainment, and clothes. Savings and debt repayment make up the final 20% of your budget.

Clayman argues, “our culture sometimes pushes people to try to become independent too fast, and then we remain in this sort of proto-adult stage for a much longer time because of it”. I see many people struggle to get by and live paycheck to paycheck.

Moving out of your parents house is a important step you take toward independence. However, the freedom of living on your own comes with great responsibility, financial and otherwise. Before you take this bold step, make sure you’re fully prepared for what’s ahead.
