Donald Glover, took the media by storm when he dropped the music video to his song, “This Is America”. This was a cultural phenomenon.
“He’s smart as f---,” commented a very enthusiastic Forsyth Satellite Academy student, Marquise Samuels. Samuels goes on explaining how impactful this video is socially. The video pertains to issues that many Black Americans face, including small subliminal messages that hint adversities blacks have dealt with dating back to slavery.
When asked about the video, David Cruz, a fellow Forsyth Student responded, “as a musician, I feel that what we put into our songs and release into the public is crucial, a lot of artist tend to talk about things that most times don’t do anything for the culture. It was [the video] a great way to show young people obstacles that we, as minorities, face in reality. He’s done something for the culture.”
The culture? Black culture. In the video Glover takes on police brutality against Blacks, gun control in America, and how it affects the Black community. Throughout the video he's seen dancing with a group of black kids, even after the scenery takes a dark turn, this signifies how desensitized our children are to all the killings going on around them.
Glover proves how rap can impact the community positively, he took real life issues and created moving art, which will now be cultural history.
