#MeToo, a two word movement that has connected and linked survivors of sexual assault and harassment across the nation. The movement has been successful in creating a voice for survivors, and bringing awareness to the problem, however the future of the movement is crucial.
The organization, Me Too, was created by Tarana Burke, to help victims of sexual assault and harassment. Ten years prior to creating the organization, Burke was inspired and deeply moved by a conversation with a young girl who was sexually assaulted.
Burke explained, “It was a catchphrase to be used from survivor to survivor to let folks know that they were not alone and that a movement for radical healing was happening and possible...when you experience trauma and meet other people that have a similar experience, and you show empathy for each other, it creates a bond.”
After many allegations of sexual assault in Hollywood, actress Alyssa Milano reignited the catchphrase after tweeting, “If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'me too' as a reply to this tweet.” The catchphrase rapidly turned into a movement.
In an interview with Anastasia Mourzkhanova, a self described feminist, she says,“I hope that the #metoo movement will bring to light all the sexual violence that goes on not just in Hollywood, but all over America and the world. I hope that it pushes victims to fight back and bring about the revolution that we need so badly.”
Mourzkhanova goes further to explain the importance of #metoo, “Sexual abuse can make you feel like you don’t have any control at all. If this movement is successful in bringing about change, it can help so many victims, both men and women, feel like they’re in control of their lives, like they’re finally secure. This movement can help prevent so many sexual crimes if it ends up successful. The power of this movement is the exact reason why we need to focus on the future of it.”
The future of the #metoo movement is too powerful and influential to disregard. If we continue to focus on the voices and future of #metoo, it will change the future of our society.
