EQUALITY

Coming out and telling your loved ones that you’re a part of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community is hard for some, others it’s not that difficult. Mainly because you don’t really know what reaction you’re going to get, it could be negative or positive. LGBT’s kind of face a lot they get the side eyes, the judgement, and definitely the negative comments. Now even though some are used to it, there is places where discrimination shouldn’t be allowed. Statistics show that 15% to 43% of people apart of the LGBT community have experienced some form of discrimination or harassment at their place of work. You can’t help but questioned why are they looked or treated differently than others.

I sat down and held a conversation with Anita Torres a teacher here at Satellite who happens to be very open about her sexuality. Just to get a little inside of any personal discrimination experiences when in the working field.

Kenya: Did you think you would get any job while being a part of the LGBT community?

Anita: It’s something I don’t mention actually. I feel as if in the working system people apart of the LGBTQ plus community is placed into a box, you kind of have to hide who you are in order to fit into this machismo criteria they have. I do change my image for when applying and being interviewed for jobs but once I’m hired I go back to the “rainbow” I am.

LGBTQ have made many complaints about being placed into a box and feeling as if they are different as well as treated different from others just because of their sexualities especially at a place of work. At the end we still have to come to a realization that people a part of the LGBTQ community is still human and have just as much feelings as everyone else. Nobody should have to alter who they’re to make sure that they won't receive any negative comments from their working place. All they want is everyone to be more open minded and stop the discrimination.
