New York City has a lot of teenagers and young adults, but very few of them drive.
According to the New York Times, “A third of New York State's 16- and 17-year-olds live in New York City, according to census figures, but less than a tenth of the 82,000 youngsters in the state who had junior driving licenses last year lived in the city, according to the State Department of Motor Vehicles.” Meaning that most 16 to 17 year olds in New York City do not even bother to get a driver’s license.
An interview with Student Mark Santapan at City Tech College in brooklyn says “ i would buy a car if i had the money, but i believe money is the main issue in which young adults wont bother to buy a car because they simply don't have the money for one but i believe if they did have the money they would be more willing to get there drivers licence and purchase one. Money is the deciding factor”.
Another student at brooklyn college by the name of Frank Croce says “To be honest cars are nice and all but i live in a city there really is no need for a car when you live in a city that is ran by public transportation for me and many others, so i see no need to purchase a car at such a young age. However as for a drivers licence i would be more than happy to get it just to have it for the future and/or if i have to drive someone else's car at some point in time”.
When it comes down to it, the choice is in the teenagers hands whether or not they want a drivers permit, licence or even a car, but each one is not cheap especially a car and the car world comes with many responsibilities that the driver must take such as car insurance, safety of pedestrians, other cars, and passengers along for the ride, Drive Safely!
