199 young couples tied the knot to mark the city’s 199th anniversary

Arranged marriages for 199 young couples to mark Grozny’s 199th anniversary

On October 5th of 2017, in one of the federal subjects of Russia, the Chechen Republic, Grozny, 199 young couples tied the knot to mark the city’s 199th anniversary.

Chechen people went through a lot to get their independence, they did not like being ruled by Russia, they are very proud of their culture, of their religion and of their ruler Ramzan Kadirov for shaping Chechnya into what it is today. Chechnya went through two bloody wars, the conflict between Chechen and the Russian government began in the 1990s. As the Soviet Union disintegrated, the Chechen separatists declared independence in 1991. By late 1994 the First Chechen War broke out and after two years of fighting the Russian forces withdrew from the region. The second war began In December of 1996, Russian forces attacked Chechnya, beginning a bloody, embarrassing conflict in which the Russian military proved rather inept. That war ended in August, 1996 with the Chechens claiming victory and independence, and the Russian government claiming victory and the retention of Chechnya as a part of Russia. In other words, both sides agreed to disagree and halted the major fighting.

Based on the number of years since the founding of Grozny, 199 couples got married following Vainakh traditions (people of North Caucasus, Chechens and Ingush), in the territory of the newly opened flower park in the capital of the Chechen Republic, TASS correspondent reports. The ceremony was held on the City’s Day under a tent of cable-stayed construction of exclusive work depicting eight mountain peaks.

The Chechen republic is predominantly Muslim, religion and tradition is what makes Chechnya so special. The brides and grooms that participated in the mass wedding all volunteered, they did not know each other, they did it following traditions with arranged marriages that state that the groom and bride cannot see each other until the day of the wedding. They did it to celebrate and honor their city’s independence, they are thankful for years of peace and all the improvements what have been made. It is crazy thinking about what some people do for their culture and religion. Students of Forsyth don’t think that arranged marriages are honorable, “Everyone deserves to have the choice of choosing the person who they want to spend the rest of their lives with, when you are in a arranged marriage you don’t know the person, it’s not right,” Justin said.

“Its wrong to marry someone who you don’t know, it’s wrong to marry a person with whom you don’t have a relationship with, its wrong to marry a person you don't have a connection with. That person will be tied to you for the rest of your life, you have to choose for yourself, carefully, because it is your future and your life.” Enrique stated.

"199 young couples from all over the republic took part in the wedding ceremony in honor of the birthday of the city, which is now 199 years old, and this event shows that despite the fact that time is moving forward, the world is changing ... the basis of the culture of the Chechen people is its language and traditions. The idea of the wedding came from the Leader of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, all of the organization’s(wedding) expenses were paid by the Akhmat-Hadji Kadyrov regional public fund," the city's mayor Muslim Khuchiyev said.

During the chechen wars, young children bravely fought beside men and women for their independence.
