Teenagers need at least 9 hours of sleep. They are not getting enough each night. New York City public schools can be part of the issue due to early start times.
According to the nationwide Children's Hospital teens between the ages of 13-19 need at least 9 ½ hours of sleep each night. Teenagers are getting less than that amount they are only getting approximately 7 to 7 ½ each night.
A survey was conducted at Forsyth Satellite about sleep time. Results showed that most students are not getting enough sleep, but they would not want school to start later.
Although this might be surprising, students would not like to start later in the day because it will affect their daily life. Some students did not want school to start later because they have jobs and kids. Others live far, and getting released after three would be frustrating.
Even if school started later, students would not be able to get their 9 hours of sleep because of other responsibilities.
